Mark Spitzack, M.S.M., received his B.A. degree in Church Music and Christian Education in 1985 from Concordia University in Saint Paul, Minnesota, where he studied organ with Dr. John Eggert. He served as a director of music and Christian education for Lutheran congregations in Minnesota, Colorado and California before taking a hiatus from church work for several years to pursue other interests and goals. Mark returned in earnest to church music in 2001. He is a member of Mount Olive Lutheran Church in south Minneapolis, a parish known for its passion for creative high quality liturgy and music. At Mount Olive, Mark helped Cantor David Cherwien start a small choir school program and then served as Director of Children's Ministries for several years. In 2008, he received the Master of Sacred Music degree from Luther Seminary. The MSM program is operated in conjunction with St. Olaf College and combines musical training with theological study. Mark's organ teacher was Dr. Catherine Rodland, and his instructors in conducting, service playing, improvisation, composition, hymnody, and liturgics included Dr. Christopher Aspaas, Dr. Anton Armstrong, Dr. John Ferguson, Dr. David Cherwien, and the Rev. Dr. Paul Westermeyer. Mark is the Coordinator of Special Projects for the Birth and Family Education department at Fairview Health Services.
